In this project CED sort to clean Nairobi River and improve the livelihood of the people along identified section of the river in Kangemi. This was achieved through:
- Organized interactive and learning forums with the community.
- Cleaning up the identified section of the river,
- Planting trees and landscaping around the buffer zone,
- Fencing the section of the dump site
- Building small kiosks, resting places for the people.
- Monitoring and evaluation of the project activities.
The overall goal of the project is to clean up the identified section of the river from the dumpsite to Mau Mau Bridge and build kiosks. In order to create a clean and safe environment, improve their livelihood thereby reducing poverty and contributing to millennium development goals to halve poverty by 2015.
The main objectives were:
- To clean the identified section of Nairobi River along Kangemi.
- Targeted people especially the Youths, people with disabilities, women groups increase their income through kiosks.
- To enlighten the community on water resource management.
- To improve livelihoods and enhance proper sanitation.
The project cleaned the river section and the buffer zone to improve the aesthetic beauty; it also created awareness and educate the communities on safe waste disposal methods and learn to take care of the river their source of water. The project activities included community education, sensitization, trainings, workshops, planting trees, fencing around the dumpsite, dredging the surface run off canals, building of kiosks and relaxation benches etc.
